Dearest Little Cottage,
........The warmth with which you radiate keeps the outside world at bay. God’s majesty is present outside every window and it makes your magic all the more joyful. Thank you little cottage, for allowing us to share with you. Thank you for your comfort and hospitality. It’s been a true blessing being here and we hope we have the opportunity again.

Dearest Little Cottage and Forest Friends, We’re here for our second wedding anniversary and yet again enjoying your charms. This makes our third stay since our honeymoon and the magic of this place never diminishes. We hope this treasure stays unspoiled so that we can continue to come back year after year. We never get tired of the immense beauty surrounding this place and the woodland creatures who come to say hello. We wish you the best and hope you stay timeless.

I am a writer of stories. When we found “Storybook Cottage” on the “Blackberry Inn” website, it was our natural coice. We did not know it was Snow White’s own personal little cottage where she dwells with her seven little dear ones. They were all away together, deep in the forest on some adventure, but they left us lovely breakfast goodies, warm beds, fluffy towels, books to read, a nook to read beside a roaring fire and their charming home. We loved it dearly.
We read many of the other notes of appreciation from others. One person wrote that this place feels like “Holy Ground”, and that perhaps it does, because there have been so many weddings here. I agree, the spirit of this little spot in the woods is pure, tender. It feels like a promise kept, a hug shared, laughter heard, a secret shared. Some have written that they wish they could buy this place to “own” it. It is so easy to embrace such a wish. Such a longing to remain in such a place. Yet, I feel we all collectively make it the special place it is, and that we all “own” it. Each of us dwell here during our visits and when we leave we stay connected here with our memories. Every child who laughed in these rooms...listen, they can still be heard in the wind outside. Every expression of love remains here. Look at the sun flickering through the trees, at the sparkle of night stars. We all come back here individually, but once here we all become a community of the “Storybook” family and our individual stories bind together in chapters of joy. Today my heart reaches back to all who have stayed here before, and it reaches forward to all who will stay here in the future. Together we are gathered on the arms of this wonderful place........

And Tim added.............We thought it might be ideal for our wedding. We were so right. This lovely cottage has so many charming features from its “Snow White” theme, painted leaves and flowers, comfortable furnishing, luxurious bath to its unique and beautiful architecture.
We were married in the livingroom on Sunday and felt like we were story book characters ourselves. We hope to return for many wedding anniversary visits in the future to this place which is so dear to our hearts.

One of our guests quoted John Muir: “Everybody needs beauty as well as bread. Places to play in and places to pray in, where nature may heal and cheer and give strength to body and soul”.
They then went on to say: “We’re so grateful for the strength and healing and cheer that our stay on the Mendocino coast has given us,... and then to return to this fairy tale cottage! We loved the window seat, the smell of the fir trees, the radiant heat floors, reading the story of Snow White, fresh flowers, basket of goodies, big fluffy white towels, recliner chairs and, of course, the bathtub fit for two! I hope we’ll be coming for the next 10 years (as another guest has been). To those who come after: “May nature heal and cheer and strengthen your body and soul.

This is our first time staying at the Story Book Cottage. It is so wonderful that there are places like this that can make you feel so warm and so happy and so full of love. With a crackling fire and a glass of champagne and your loved one in your arms, we now know where the term ‘home sweet home’ comes from. We watched the deer and the sun break through the tall trees every day. We relaxed in the wonderful tub as deer ran by the window. Today we are leaving, but the memories and the love we have for this cottage will stay with us always.

The souls of our feet have curled up with comfort, cushioned by the beautiful warmth of the floor and the hot cracdle of the open fire. We are grateful and content; like two purring cats, happy right to our toes. Snow White + the 7 really know how to live. This place is wonderful. We’ll have to let Goldilocks know + Hansel and Gretal too. Big big thanks for a wonderful weekend in the magic of the forest.

We loved this place. The pictures definitely do not do it justice. We try to stay in different places each time we come, but I think we have found our home away from home. Although we get away quite often, this little get away proved to be peacefull and tranquil, which seemed impossible in light of our Nations plight. (Oct 9, 2001). Thanks again and we will be back soon.

........The trees are magnificent and humbling. Our compliments to the architect for creating and sharing this special place. I loved the ivy that is stenciled everywhere! We had a wonderful soak in the tub before snuggling into the big bed......Looking up at the tall trees thru the skylight or from the bed upon waking, reminds one of how small we really are. We plan to return more often and look forward to staying ......It is overcast and misting, which only brings out the beautiful colors of the surrounding forest. Three days is not enough! I could stay here forever!

What a delight this cottage is! Our family felt so warmly wecomed. The yummy treats, chocolate chip cookies (our favorite), and wonderful banana nut bread were such special surprises! The events of the world around us were wisked away and we were enveloped in the cozy warmth and safe spirit of the cottage and the wonders of Mother Nature.
How funny that in a “triple A” where to go book, we found this marvelous haven. Thank you so very much for all the special touches!

P. S. Our 78 year old Grandmere thought being in this enchanted cottage actually made her skin look much younger! We agreed!

We’re captivated by this precious cottage. We’re here for my husbands’ birthday and it has rained every minute. Who cares! ..we’ve enjoyed cooking great stuff, eating by the fire and expperiencing nature out the windows. Also, I haven’t told him yet...I think we’re expecting a baby - our first! We couldn’t be happier!

My husband and I are here today celebrating our 13th wedding anniversary. We have truly enjoyed each others company in this beautiful cottage. He very carefully planned our stay in Mendocino and being that I am facinated with the beauty and innocence of Snow White, made our stay even more special. We have explored every room and found a favorite thing in all of them. We found peace and tranquility away from our busy lives in these woods. We were comforted in the cozyness of this cottage and hope that many others can experience the same. As everyone else, we hope to make this an annual trip. We enjoyed our stay in Snow Whites’ Cottage and hope to bring our children to this tucked away wonder next year.

.......Afraid it might have gone a little too far towrds cute - but it stopped perfectly - enough to be whimsical, not so much to be tacky. Together, we enjoyed the coastline, the town, the warmth of the fire. He opted for the “box bed” by the fire. Isn’t it interesting how all who’ve written here never want to leave...say, “This is all I need”. With all our “things” in this wealthy land, the spirit still responds to simplicity and cozy shared spaces. Thank you for the opportunity to put it all back in perspective! We hope to return as soon as time and distance allow.

A little history:
Yes, Snow White did marry her handsome Prince Charming and lived happily ever after in their beautiful castle.....but.....the demands of her royal life required Snow to retreat to the country regulary to keep her sweet spirit just that. Since Snow loved the dwarfs, and felt so at home in their little cottage, Prince and the dwarfs put their heads together and came up with the perfect solution. An addition would be made to the home for the newly weds! But, being honeymooners, they really did need some time to themselves, so Prince also built the dwarfs a wonderful new cottage much closer to the jewel mines (so they didn’t have so far to travel to work). Now, they are all a big, happy extended family and the Charmings always keep the little room upstairs ready for their beloved dwarfs when they want to visit.
In between the times when the dwarfs or the Charmings are in residence, they have given us permission to sublet their delightful abode.
Now, the real history:
The original form of this house was built during Mendocino’s hippy, hand-crafted era, by John & Judy Hayes. We have done our best to keep the integrity of their dream alive, while also making the home more light, larger, warm & inviting. John was a painter & a potter...a few pieces of his work are in the kitchen.....as well as some that are still found around the property......we’ll let you find them.
Judy was Snow White
